Industry Overview
Aerospace and defense is one of the most metals-intensive industries, with aluminum comprising up to 80% of commercial aircraft structures by weight and titanium critical for jet engines and military airframes. A typical Boeing 787 contains approximately 20% titanium by weight. Defense contractors face additional exposure to rare earth elements used in precision-guided munitions, radar systems, and electronic warfare equipment. Jet fuel (kerosene) costs directly impact airline customers' ability to purchase new aircraft, creating an indirect commodity sensitivity channel.
