Industry Overview
Healthcare is a less obvious but significant commodity consumer. Hospitals are among the most energy-intensive commercial buildings, operating 24/7 with massive HVAC, lighting, and equipment loads. Medical devices rely on petrochemical-derived plastics, stainless steel, titanium for implants, and platinum for catalytic sensors. The single-use plastics revolution in healthcare (syringes, tubing, packaging) has created enormous petroleum-derived polymer demand. MRI machines use helium for superconducting magnets, and the global helium shortage has become a real constraint on healthcare equipment deployment.
