Nickel has become one of the most strategically important metals of the 21st century, and for a reason that would have surprised metallurgists a generation ago: it’s not about stainless steel anymore. While stainless steel still consumes roughly 65% of global nickel production, the fastest-growing demand segment — and the one driving marginal pricing — is battery cathodes for electric vehicles. High-nickel chemistries like NMC 811 (80% nickel, 10% manganese, 10% cobalt) and NCA (nickel-cobalt-aluminum) have become the cathode of choice for premium EVs because nickel delivers superior energy density, translating directly to longer driving range.

The current nickel price of $18,500 per tonne — up 12% year-to-date — reflects a market grappling with a fundamental paradox. Indonesia, which controls over 50% of global nickel production, has flooded the market with nickel pig iron (NPI) and matte, yet battery-grade Class 1 nickel (>99.8% purity) remains tight. The bottleneck isn’t total nickel supply — it’s the refining capacity to convert Indonesia’s laterite ores into the high-purity nickel sulfate that cathode manufacturers require. From Indonesian mines to Chinese refineries to Korean and Japanese cathode plants to Tesla’s Gigafactories, every link in the chain is operating with thin buffers and long lead times.
